Durham and our woodland workshop in the astonishingly inspiring mountains of eastern Norway

August dates for the three courses at our woodland workshop in eastern Norway are now on the calendar, let us know if you would like more information.

For the last Green Woodworking - An Introduction course of 2011 we were joined by CEO of Wetterlings Axes of Sweden Julia Kalthoff who had accepted our invitation to make a shavehorse at our Co.Durham workshop when we visited the Storvik factory this August.  Julia brought with her a small selection of axes for us to try, including a Small Hunter's Axe, a new Broad Axe, a Carpenter's Axe and an interesting forest axe with a long handle with a light efficient head. We are very excited about Wetterlings Axes, not only because of the provenance and quality but because they are down to earth durable axes that look fantastic. Julia's English rustic style shavehorse has been shipped to the Storvik factory and is being used to custom shape handles to fit older axes brought back to be refurbished.

Don't forget if you are interested in broader ranging woodcraft training then consider the NCFE Green Woodcraft course, based at Houghall College, Durham. This comprehensive 27 training day course, due to start early January 2012, is led by nationally recognised craftsman.  Mainly hands-on, this course offers a solid introduction to a wide range of greenwood crafts from coppice products to basket making and pole lathe turning. The course runs two days per week, every Thursday and Friday for about 4 months. Contact Maurice for more information;

GREEN WOODWORKING TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES FOR TRADITIONAL WOODLAND CRAFT


The Woodsmith’s Store is a north-east England based supplier of hand tools, books, devices and other equipment that will be of interest to people working with green wood. Typically our customers are coppice woodland workers, chair makers, gate makers, timber framers, charcoal burners, pole lathe turners, forestry workers, bush crafters and anyone who enjoys working outdoors, with wood, in a traditional way.

You will receive impartial advice from us about the best green woodworking tools and accessories or books for a particular job. The tools we have sourced so far…and there are many more to come…have to do their job very well, often in professional conditions and be a joy to behold and own.   As a general rule if  we are not prepared to give a tool space in our own toolbox then we won't stock it.


Many of our tools are sourced from UK makers who we have personally visited and can vouch for their high standards of workmanship and integrity. They must share our view that well made, good quality tools if properly cared for and maintained should last a very long time, if not a lifetime.  It is sadly all too common that many tools today are made cheaply and not designed to last, this is neither good for the environment or our own attachment to equipment that can become good and trusted friends.

Remember we won't sell you something you don't need.
