About

About The Woodsmith’s Store

After 12 years in the woodland craft business, occasionally selling tools and books to students attending his courses on a very small scale, owner of The Woodsmith's Store Maurice Pyle thought it was about time to develop a retail side of the business making it easier for new entrants to the subject, working professionals and keen amateurs to tool up with good quality kit. Many of the things we sell are not commonly available.

Maurice makes his wide practical experience of traditional woodland craft available when helping customers decide on a tool, book or device. His particular craft specialisms are pole lathe turning, charcoal burning, wooden bowl carving, cleft ash gates, willow/hazel weaving, practical coppice/woodland management and more recently spoon carving. He organised and tutored ‘Woodcraft courses in the Great North Forest’ for more than 10 years, is the co-ordinator and main tutor for the NCFE Certificate in Woodcraft at Houghall College, Durham and is a Trustee of the Bill Hogarth Memorial Apprenticeship Trust (BHMAT). He has a beautifully located workshop within the grounds of Beamish Open Air Museum, Co.Durham from where he bases a range of woodcraft courses each year, tutored by himself and guest tutors. In the last few years we have introduced a range of courses in eastern Norway, drawing upon the rich woodcraft heritage of the Holoydal Valley.
