Bark Peelers
A small but interesting category! Morris of Dunsford make the two hand 'peelers' listed here.
I first heard of oak bark peeling for the high-class leather tanning industry. Bill Hogarth MBE, Coppice Merchant of South Lakes, used to spend 3 months of his life each year peeling the bark from coppiced oak. During the Spring and early summer when the sap is rising bark falls from the stem very easily. Effectivly, Bill used to sell two products from the same cut piece of oak, the bark to the tanning industry and the peeled rustic poles to rustic outdoor furniture makers. During the bark peeling season his hands were constantly stained black.
