Billhooks, Slashers and Grass Hooks
In our own coppicing work we cut mainly birch for besom brooms and hazel for wattle in-fill panels. Hazel in the north east, not generally growing in tight, deer free conditions, tends to be of fairly poor quality.
Billhooks are probably the single most important tool for the coppice worker. Users and collectors favour such old names as Elwell, Nash and Gilpin. However if you want a new useable well balanced billhook we believe there is only one manufacturer to choose - Morris of Dunsford. A Morris and Sons is an old company, first started in 1909, that has in the past made a range of tools but have reverted back to mainly specialising in billhooks.
Recently added a new billhook from Morris to our range: known as the Hampshire Hurdlers Hook (or a Hurdlers Trimming Hook or.......) about the same proportions as the Newtown but with the addition of a short straight edge where the pointy bit normally is. Handle is caulked.
All tools have handles that are varnished but we can order them twith unvarnished handles at no extra cost.
