Unless you have a high torque, low gear, low speed power drill this is your best option to create holes accurately through hardwoods. However you must remember to regularly withdraw the auger to clean out the waste otherwise it will jam and put unneccasary strain on the jaws. The ratchet action is very useful when the going gets tough
