Knives
During our Summer holidays last year we could not resist calling in on Svante Djarv on our way through Sweden. He and Elsa work from a workshop behind their house (how many of us dream of that?). Svante is the one who carefully and skillfully bashes and grinds the metal to produce the excellent tools we are begining to appreciate whilst Elsa makes and fits the handles to the tools, she also deals with the office and dispatces the orders. It was clear talking to Svante and Elsa that their business has grown and developed out of a clear understanding of what a particlar tool has to do, one that works very well and is a joy to have in the hand. The following is a translation of the copy on each of Svante's tools
"I am a craftsman who combines working closely with nature and traditional craft
I aim to create tools that are not only functional and designed to do a particular job very well but which are also pleasing to the eye. Each tool is individually hand made.
The blade, made from high carbon tool steel, is heat treated to about 60 on the Rockwell Scale so our tools will take and hold a great edge"
Many of our knives come from Frosts of Mora, Sweden. Knives have been made in and around the town of Mora for more than 300 years, and Frost Knivfabrik was started more than 100 years ago by Erik Frost. Today the knives that come out of the modern and well organised factory are mass produced but attain a good level of sharpness and are quite tough. They are also a great price.
We will not sell knives to anyone under the age of 18
We stock a small range of folding knives from well known French knife makers Opinel. Including a pruning knife and a general purpose pocket knife.
