If you lack the space or the inclination to set up a traditional pole for your pole lathe, an alternative is to fix a couple of poles to the side of your lathe and tie this shock cord between them to provide the 'return stroke'

1.7m of 10mm shockcord, enough to span a 48" pole lathe bed and to tie a knot at each end
Additional notes
When first learning to use the pole lathe I did much of my practising in the garage during the winter months where there was very little space (the MG Midget may have had something to do with it). I simple screwed a couple of ring hooks into wooden roof joists and tied a length of shockcord between them, tied the treadle cord to the middle and hey presto!
