Bregenzar Canoe Stone
Canoe shaped stone for the sharpening of billhooks, scythes, grass hooks etc
Product Description
Good quality, Austrian made canoe shaped stone for the sharpening of billhooks, scythes, grass hooks etc. Approx. size 200mm x 30mm at it's widest point x 17mm.
Natural fine grit Bregenzer sandstone; about 300 grit; this will get a good working edge on your stone, not as fine as some other stones, less expensive but more fragile. It will break easily if you drop it. This stone is riven, rather than sawn, so it's broad faces are rough. In the field it can be used to touch up a maintained edge or finish an edge that has had something like the Silicar stone on it.
These stones are naturally quarried, therefore do have irregular surfaces, this does not affect their performance.
We would reccommend also having a Silicar Canoe Stone which is coarser to remove dings and to deal with more serious edge dullness
Lubricate with water

Additional notes
In our veiw, when sharpening a billhook there is no need to be quite as exact as you might be with an edge tool such as an axe or a carving knife, ie no need to be quite as fastidious when removing the burr or work towards a mirror finish on the edge. In the workshop billhooks are sharpened very easliy on a benchgrinder such as a Tormek, but these canoe stones do the job almost as well and the only option when out in the field (or the woods).
If you break these stones in two, they can be glued back together after very thorough drying with epoxy resin.
